Nails, Fingerpicks or Finger tips?

I have tried fingerpicks - the only ones I found useful were the metal ones, but I find that they clatter and scrape on the strings.

I now use fingertips followed by fingernails. The tip of the finger just touches the string to damp it and then it is struck (not really plucked) by the nail. The nail does not need to be long - just protruding from the tip of the finger.

On the other hand (the left) your nails do need to be kept short. From now on you have to use your left hand for those special activities where short nails are neccessary. If you get very good at fingerpicking you should get plenty of the other action because the girls will be very impressed with your Wiggly Fingers.
