The Roll and Discords

The roll at first appears to be a very easy technique. Bluegrass banjo players use little else. However, it does take practice to execute smoothly and keep the right rhythm.

Step 3 - A little tune:  This goes A7, D7, G7,C - but you keep the same chord shape (D7 position 2) all the way through.

Play the shape starting at the 10th fret (A7 - forward roll - four times),

slide down to start the chord at the 3rd fret (D7 - reverse roll - four times),

slide up to the 8th fret (G7 - forward roll - four times),

end with a C in the first position using the routine from lesson 1. The notation shown is not quite what I play in the sound clip - just feel free to improvise.
There are one or two extra notes in the example - as you are playing the whole chord any that you add yourself will probably be an improvement.
